Georgia On My Mind
As a painter, more than a few things regarding New Mexico have given me pause. One is painting the Sandia Mountains east of my home. The other has been Georgia O'Keeffe.
Although I have often wanted to have her abilities, I never tried to be her — I knew better than to waste my time that way. I have understood for many years why she lived where she did and loved what she loved, why she chose her subjects in and around Abiquiu, New Mexico. Georgia O'Keeffe was not only courageous as a painter, she was also fearless.
For over 44 years, I too have loved and studied the land around Abiquiu and Georgia's paintings regarding it. I only recently felt confident enough to attempt painting my understanding of that landscape. When I finished the work, there was only one title for the painting — after all, Abiquiu and its environs will forever be hers.
